Learning How to Achieve Safe Operational Excellence!

“Show me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
Xun Kuang, Chinese
philosopher

Behaviors are difficult to change and the older we get the harder it becomes.   For examples a golfer, takes thousands of repetitions to change a golf swing.   Also, the young age groups adapted quicker to change as compared to the older age groups.  Even great golfers like Tiger Woods have a coach.

Similarly, we must introduce Human Performance to adults with proper training.  Recently, Safety Performance LLC had the opportunity to introduce Human Performance to NAES Personnel at the Longridge Energy Power Plant.   Training included an understanding of how Human Performance Fundamentals and Tools lead to achieving safe operational excellence.

During training, personnel were provided a procedure and parts to assemble a “Piping Challenge”.   Teams consisting of workers and a supervisor.  They were challenged to properly use Human Performance Tools to achieve safe plant operation.  Examples of student feedback:

“Great topic for improving plant safety culture.”

“I liked this approach to safety.  Safety training can be boring.  This training treats us like humans and not robots.  It’s a refreshing look at Safety and Safety Culture.”

“Loved the hands-on activity to highlight what we were leaning.
The best safety class I’ve had.”

Dynamic Learning Exercises like the “Piping Challenge” play a vital part in understanding human performance tools to change behaviors in an organization.    Using activities like this you can also incorporate safety processes (i.e., Lock Out / Tag Out), supervision, oversight, and coaching.
